My FOG calculated index was 1.39. I am assuming that means that someone with a first grade education would be able to understand my writing. I think on one hand that it’s good because my writing is simplistic and east to understand however I feel like it denigrates my educational level and does not make me shine as brightly as I would like. I hope to improve my writing style during this class and am aiming to follow Winston Churchill’s example ship. As stated by my textbook “Inside Reporting” his FOG index comes to about 3.4. If that’s good enough to become the prime minister of Great Britain then I figure I wouldn’t be doing half bad.
Writing Sample:
"My favorite speech? That was hard to choose. I felt that many of my classmates did an excellent job. I was persuaded to take action so there is one I would say was my favorite. I was convinces though of the fact that I should give blood regularly. I was informed that there is a blood shortage and because of that If I or family members need blood there is a possibility that we could not receive some. I don’t want to leave the responsibility up to someone else but I want to make a change in someone’s life by donating blood on a regular basis. I also liked the speech about general education requirements in the respect that it is a known fact that American children lag behind the rest of the world in learning. I believe that a overhaul is needed and the American way and schedule throughout out primary and higher learning institutions is needed."

Actually, I think you need to recalculate; maybe you slipped a decimal point.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to try using an online FOG Index calculator like this one: http://simbon.madpage.com/Fog/. It gives you a 12.09, not a 1.39.
This is a good example of why it always pays to think about the results you get. If they don't make sense ... well, maybe it's because they're not right. Good reporters look for "red flags" that indicate something may be amiss.
